Book review

Therese Lafirm, a young widow living in the post-Reconstruction South, is proposed to by David Hosmer, a divorced man. Her acceptance or rejection may have dire consequences when Fanny, Hosmer's ex-wife, comes into the picture. Chopin's themes of the liberated woman and her relationships caused an uproar in her time, but they set the stage for a future examination of women's role in society. (Five 90's)
